Mrs. Catherine Weld, Daughter to the Lord Aston and Edward Weld, Esquire, her Husband: Containing, I. Her Libel Exhibited Against Him for Impotency - author unknown. Publication info - London: Printed for E. Rayner, 1732.
Three years after they were wed, Catherine Weld brought a suit against her husband Edward to dissolve their marriage because he was not able to consummate it. [texts]Remarks upon the Trial of William Sutton, Esq. by an Impartial By-Stander - author unknown. Publication info - London: Benjamin Sibthorpe, 1761.
William Sutton was tried for, and acquitted of, murdering a prostitute by stabbing her twice "so she should not be able to sit", the wounds afterwards becoming infected. The case was the talk of the town, and became the subject of a series of pamphlets alternately arguing Sutton's guilt and innocence. In this pamphlet, the first three pages are spent excoriating the victim, in the guise of arguing that no matter how depraved she might have been, she still should not have been murdered...

True Crime account. Bridget Durgan was convicted and hanged for murdering Mrs. Coriel, her employer. In the opening passages of this book, which also contains a text which purports to be a confession written by Durgan herself, the themes that will sound through the book are revealed: Durgan is "wretched", "brutal", a "demon girl" possessed of a "hellish design". This account would appear to provide little opportunity for titillation, but the writer manages to inject sex into the story both by em...

The case between Catherine Cadière and her spiritual director, Jean-Baptiste Girard, was a famous and closely-followed scandal of its time. She accused him of seduction, "spiritual incest" (that is, introducing sex into a religious relationship of power), witchcraft, and heresy. The case was so notorious that the Crown intervened, ordering the Parlement of Aix to try the complaint. Of course, the case and trial were titillating...

Publication info: London: Printed for J. Barker, c. 1795
An abundance of publications is a sure sign that canny publishers and printers have ascertained the interest of their market in a person or a series of events. One such person, whose fame in her own time may be compared to that of the women who dominate our television and computer screens today, was Elizabeth Chudleigh (1720-1788). Chudleigh was attached to the English court as maid of honor to the Princess of Wales...

The Duke of Norfolke brought suit against his wife for divorce, and produced witnesses who testified that his wife had joined in adulterous union with Sir John Germaine. These witnesses were foreigners, who had to have translators, but they made it perfectly clear that they had seen Lady Mary in bed with Sir John. The witnesses for the Duchess, on the other hand, were truculent, and showed every sign of being unwilling to testify truthfully...

[texts]Witchcraft Farther Display'd - Francis Bragge. London, Printed for E. Curll, 1712.
Jane Wenham was the last person prosecuted for witchcraft in England. She quarreled with her neighbors and then unwisely brought suit against the one who had called her "a witch and a bitch." Things went from bad to worse and she found herself charged, tried, and convicted of witchcraft. The judge obtained a reprieve, and then a pardon from the Queen. The case was a nexus of dispute â about the reality of witchcraft â and there was an outpouring of pamphlets, some of which described her crimes...

The contradictory accounts of Thomas Cresswell and Elizabeth Scrope about their relationship are more than just an example of "he said; she said" â although they do represent the genre to an extreme degree. Before the Clandestine Marriage Bill of 1753 was passed, marriage in England was legal if a couple promised to live together as man and wife, even if they had no witnesses, and even if the marriage was not consummated...
